Off to Heron Island with a couple of police officers who escorted us for the entirety of our trip. Our task was to locate and render safe ordnance found scattered below the waterline around Fitzroy Reef, which is about 17km southeast of Heron Island.
We also had a marine biologist with us thought the trip. He was there to ensure we made minimal impact on the reef and marine life. To ensure this we placed and detonated charges above the reef, in a hole in the sand. We also waited for high tide so water could cover the explosives reducing the impact of the blast.
Clearance Divers get some pretty cool jobs… and some not so cool. This was one of my better trips. It was with a great group of guys and together we were able to make Fitzroy Island a safer place for marine life.
